The islands
The Isles of Scilly are spread over roughly 100 square miles of The Atlantic and are situated 28 miles south west from Lands End, Cornwall.
The Scilly Isles are made up of many islands and rocky out-crops with only five of the islands inhabited. St Mary's (as shown below) is the main island and is approximately 6 square miles with a population of around 1500 people.
The other inhabited islands (or off islands) are Tresco - with a population of around 100 and growing, St Martins - population of around 200, Bryher - population of around 100 and St.Agnes (the most westerly) - population of around 100.
Passenger boats travel between the islands all day and every day during the summer months. In the winter they run according to weather conditions and requirements. The average fare for a trip is around £7 to £10 return. The average time of passage between the islands is 30 minutes, nowhere is very far in the Isles of Scilly.
The sea is crystal clear and blue, but it is quite cool. Each island has it's fair share of beautiful beaches, and it is very seldom that any of them would be at all crowded even at the height of the season.
You can travel around St Mary's either by foot, bicycle, car or even taxi. There is a bus service that operates from Easter through to October on the nine miles of road, linking most of the island's communities. Various coach, minibus and vintage car tours run during the summer, bicycles may be hired and taxis are normally available throughout the year
